poster Barry Season 1

DVD Buy From Amazon

This terrific, darkly comedic HBO series from Bill Hader and Silicon Valley's Alec Berg stars the former as a depressed hitman who embarks on a career change after discovering the joys of performing while sitting in on an acting class while on a job. Hader also made his directorial debut with this excellent first season, which also stars Stephen Root, Henry Winkler, Sarah Goldberg, and Glenn Fleshler. Barry received 11 Emmy nominations, and both Hader and Winkler won for their performances.

The latest chapter in The Purge series (following The Purge, The Purge Anarchy, The Purge Election Year) serves as an origin story, depicting the time when the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) instituted the first purge in an isolated community, only to find it spreading across the nation. Directed by Gerard McMurray (Burning Sands) from a script by the original creator and director of the first three films, James DeMonaco, the film also stars Y'Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez and Marisa Tomei.

This adaptation of Peter Rock's book about a father (Ben Foster) and his teenage daughter (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie) who struggle to adapt to society after living in the wilderness together is writer-director Debra Granik's first narrative feature since winning the Grand Jury Prize and Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival for Winter's Bone. Critics have praised the lead performances and Granik's subtle direction, making it one of 2018's best-reviewed films so far.

The director (Denis Villeneuve) and lead actor (Emily Blunt) of 2015's Sicario are not back for this sequel, but Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro are. Written by original screenwriter Taylor Sheridan and directed by Stefano Sollima, Sicario: Day of the Soldado pits Brolin's Matt Graver and del Toro's Alejandro against each other after a mission goes bad and Alejandro decides to protect the daughter (Isabela Moner) of a Mexican kingpin. Despite the remaining talent, losing Villeneuve's direction and Blunt's combination of strength and vulnerability seemed to be a bit too much to overcome, as reviewers liked the sequel much less than the original.

In 1980, three strangers—Bobby Shafran, Eddy Galland, and David Kellman—discovered that they were identical triplets separated at birth. Their tale makes them momentarily famous, but Tim Wardle's documentary reveals the tragedy behind their joyful reunion. It's a film that also has several surprises, so you may want to avoid reading any more of their story before watching the film for the first time.

After receiving his lowest Metascore to date for 2016's The Sea of Trees, writer-director Gus Van Sant rebounded with this adaptation of cartoonist John Callahan's memoir. The film reunites Van Sant with his To Die For star, Joaquin Phoenix, who plays Callahan. As he struggles to give up drinking after nearly losing his life in a car accident, Callahan discovers the healing powers of art and gains a sponsor played by Jonah Hill and a girlfriend in Rooney Mara. Jack Black, Carrie Brownstein, Beth Ditto, Udo Kier, and Kim Gordon form the strong supporting cast.

One of 2018's most pleasant surprises, this indie dramedy is the feature debut for comedian turned writer-director Bo Burnham. The film follows awkward 13-year-old Kayla Day (Elsie Fisher) through her final week of middle school. The film premiered at Sundance to universal acclaim and then won best film and best actress at the Seattle International Film Festival before going on to charm audiences in theaters this summer.

If you don't already know the name Phoebe Waller-Bridge, it's time to change that. Coming off of her wildly acclaimed Prime Video comedy(-ish) series Fleabag, Waller-Bridge opted for a very different—but no less successful—series. Killing Eve is a tense, twisty, action-filled thriller pitting a normally desk-bound MI5 agent (the Emmy-nominated Sandra Oh, in her first regular role since leaving Grey's Anatomy), who is bored with her job, against a female assassin (Jodie Comer, The White Princess). The series is based on the books by Luke Jennings, and a second season is on the way in 2019.

This well-reviewed adaptation of English boxer Billy Moore's memoir details his time in two of Thailand's brutal prisons. Shot in an actual Thai prison with a cast made up of real inmates, director Jean-Stephane Sauvaire's film is a visceral look at Moore's struggle to survive by taking part in Muay Thai boxing tournaments. Critics especially admired Joe Cole's lead performance.

This summer's mandatory Dwayne Johnson action film was written and directed by Rawson Thurber, who previously teamed with The Rock for Central Intelligence. Skyscraper is not technically a remake of '70s disaster flick The Towering Inferno despite sharing a basic premise: the world's tallest building is on fire. In this case, the flames are part of a terrorist attack, but Johnson's former FBI agent is on hand to save the day.

Peyton Reed returns to direct a sequel to 2015's Ant-Man that finds Paul Rudd's Scott Lang under house arrest and in charge of a security business cleverly named X-CON with friends Luis (Michael Peña), Dave (Tip "T.I." Harris), and Kurt (David Dastmalchian). When Hank (Michael Douglas) and Hope (Evangeline Lilly) call on him to help in the rescue of Hank's wife Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer), Scott is lured out of retirement, but this time he's paired with Lilly's much more talented Wasp. Their foes include the mysterious Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Walton Goggins' Sonny Burch. Critics liked the sequel a bit more than the original.

Writer-director Hong Sang-soo reunites with his In Another Country star, Isabelle Huppert, and pairs her with the star of five of his films, Kim Min-hee, for a story about a camera that might be magical. Filmed during the 2016 Cannes Film Festival when Huppert was there for Elle and Kim for The Handmaiden, the film follows Claire (Huppert), a school teacher, and Manhee (Kim), as they try to understand the circumstances behind Manhee's recent firing from her job as a film sales assistant.

The second film in the Abba musical franchise arrives a decade after its predecessor. This time it's not adapted from a stage production, though it does feature a Greek island setting and plenty of Abba hits—so fans of the first film likely won't be disappointed. Cher joins returning stars Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Christine Baranski, and Dominic Cooper.

At this year's Sundance Film Festival, critics split on rapper-turned-writer-director Boots Riley's feature debut, though reviewers definitely warmed up to it once it reached theaters this summer. The satire—one of the most unique films you'll see all year thanks to its embrace of absurdism and magical realism as it explores issues related to race and capitalistic excess—stars Lakeith Stanfield as a telemarketer who begins to rise up the ranks (to the consternation of his girlfriend, played by Tessa Thompson), leading him to a meeting with the company's unhinged CEO (Armie Hammer) and into a world of power and depravity.

Winner of the Silver Lion at the 2017 Venice Film Festival for best director and the Lion of the Future Luigi De Laurentiis Award for a Debut Film, Xavier Legrand's family drama about a father who continues to terrorize his family after his wife and children have left him is a surprisingly intense cinematic experience. Denis Ménochet (the farmer at the beginning of Inglourious Basterds) and Léa Drucker (The Blue Room) star as the warring parents.

Yes, it's a Nicolas Cage movie—but don't let that discourage you. Writer-director Panos Cosmatos' follow-up to Beyond the Black Rainbow stars Cage as Red Miller, a lumberjack who wants one thing: bloody vengeance on his wife's killers. Set in 1983, the film follows Miller's path of revenge after Mandy (Andrea Riseborough), the love of his life, is taken from him by a cult led by Jeremiah Sand (Linus Roache). Reviews are excellent, but the film is not for the squeamish.

In the tradition of the Unfriended series, Aneesh Chaganty's debut feature takes place entirely on computer screens as it follows a father's search for his missing daughter (Michele La). John Cho stars as David Kim, a concerned father who uses his missing daughter's laptop to aid in the investigation. Debra Messing plays the detective assigned to the case. Under its original title of Search, the film won the Audience Award in the NEXT section of this year's Sundance Film Festival, where it also received excellent reviews.

This female-centered action-comedy stars Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon as best friends who are pulled into an international conspiracy when one's ex-boyfriend (Justin Theroux) reveals that he's a spy being hunted by deadly assassins. As they go on the run through Europe, the pair must come up with a plan to save the world.
